Salt - Does It Make You Gain Weight?

Salt doesn't have any calories, yet surprisingly, getting too much of it might lead to weight gain. Finnish scientists made this discovery: While studying sodium trends in American diets, they noted that as salt intake increases, so did obesity. Calories in salty snacks likely contribute to some of that, but sodium may also affect us in another way.
According to study author Heikki Karppanen, M.D., Ph.D., salt makes people thirsty, so they end up drinking more liquid calories.
Aside from its possible effect on your weight, sodium can also increase your risk to high blood pressure.
The easiest way to get less: Eat fewer packaged snacks and fast foods, which are high in salt.

FACT: 97% of young women eat too much sodium, says one study.
